Macy's Supports Diversity @ NIDL

Today (9/7/12) Macy's presented the NIDL director with a check to support the NIDL's mission of diversity in the local area. Macy's has a long standing commitment of support to diversity. The grant of $2,500.00 will help the NIDL's work in providing access materials to the Fort Wayne, LGBT community and preserving the local LGBT history and culture. The NIDL is appreciative of companies who support their staff, customers and their families in our local community.

The President Has Evolved!

The President has evolved... ... and we thank him for speaking out! Barack Obama on Wednesday, May 9th, became the first sitting president to announce his support for same-sex marriage. "I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don't Ask Don't Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married," --Barack Obama

Northeast Indiana Politicians Bully Youth Groups

Indiana politicians have no qualms about bullying youth groups with homophobic slurs. Against the backdrop of the most public court-case of bullying of a Rutgers student's suicide, Indiana Rep. Bob Morris (after some internet searches) believes the Girl Scouts is a "radicalized organization" that promotes homosexuality and Communist "role models." Then Senator David Long (March 9, 2012 Journal-Gazette) equates giving specialty plates to IYG like giving them to the KKK and in the process of revoking the plates causes the 4-H Clubs to lose their plates. Girl Scouting is the very fabric of American life and 4-H clubs are a Federal Government group for boys and girls in both the cities and on the farms. IYG (Indiana Youth Group) is a group for youth who know they are gay and don't feel welcome in other groups. So these right-to-life politicians feel it is okay to tear apart the lives of children who are alive and going to groups that help make them the future citizens in our country? Shouldn't these politicians pick on someone their own size or at least ones that are able to vote? If Indiana wants to stop bullying... maybe it should start with our politicians.

Congratulations Deb!

Donation of the Gay & Lesbian Review

The NIDL received a greetings from the Editor-in-Chief of the G&L Review informing us that they were donating a subscription. In addition they would mail us a separate package of all back issues since it's inception in 1994. The package has arrived! The Gay & Lesbian Review Worldwide first started as the Harvard Gay & Lesbian Review and is now in its 17th year of publication. It is a journal of history, culture and politics that comes out bimonthly or six times a year. It contains essays, book and movie reviews and a few poems in each issue. At NIDL the magazines are part of our archives and although they do not circulate the articles can be read and copied for study. Check it out at NIDL.

Reminding GLBT Teens they are NOT alone!

Hi NIDL fans! I’m Cassie, a fairly new volunteer at the library, and I thought it was high time I get started posting on this blog! So I wanted to share with you two great videos from the *It Gets Better Project* ( The It Gets Better Project was created to show young LGBT people the levels of happiness, potential, and positivity their lives will reach – if they can just get through their teen years. The It Gets Better Project wants to remind teenagers in the LGBT community that they are not alone — and it WILL get better. These particular videos come from the great employees at Etsy (a fun and fabulous online DIY craft shop collective), and Pixar (the folks who created *Toy Story, Wall-E,* *Despicable Me, *etcetera). They are two of my favorites so far – have a look!
